Offre de thèse sur les otolithes de poissons, en Pologne

PhD on fish otoliths:
The successful candidate will work with prof. Jarosław Stolarski and number of local and external researches (including co-supervisor from University of California, Los Angeles, CA) to pursue novel research at the interface of biochemistry and Earth and environmental sciences. The main emphasis of the project is on extraction and analyses of individual proteins and the proteome complex extracted from fossil, modern and experimentally altered fish otolith samples. Otoliths are mineral, calcium carbonate structures that are part of the gravity receptors of fish. Otoliths are frequently found in the fossil record and serve to interpret palaeobiodiversity of fish due to unique taxonomy-related morphology and in palaeoenvironmental interpretations owing to preservation of various isotope and geochemical environmental proxies. Although morphologically they resemble inorganic aggregates of calcium carbonate crystals, they are formed in a strictly genetically regulated process that involves activity of several proteins. The basic research method will be SDS-PAGE electrophoresis; other methods will include liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), and various microscopic techniques (including FE-SEM, TEM, AFM).
